Kudo’s band is expansive—19 artists are credited on L’Autre Cap—and purposefully imperfect. Hearing MSHB for the first time is like wandering into a middle-school band recital, except that their fobby Asian band leader is also singing a halting song about forests or seas. According to Kudo, most of the band members are amateurs or self-taught. To amplify the effect of their mistakes, Kudo doesn’t let the band see the songs until the recording session; he just gives them the pages and lets it rip. The result is heartwarming—just because the band’s vulnerability is, to a certain extent, the product of manipulation doesn’t make it less tender.
